My Orchid

I got an orchid for my mom for her birthday a few weeks ago. She has a small but growing (no pun intended) collection that she started a couple years ago. So, I thought I'd add to it.

Since the store I bought it at had a sale on orchids, I purchased it about a week before her party and got very attached to it. So, when I had to give it up to its rightful owner, I decided to get one for us.

Its fun and different from the more traditional Phaelenopsis - the flowers look kind of spider-like and the yellow and burgundy go well in our wild, tropical bedroom. And I've managed to successfully transplant it, using some bark from our own creek bank, and keep it alive and blooming. If this continues going well, orchids could become my new plant addiction!

Porscha's New Smile

My oldest niece Porscha just got her braces off after two years. This is a big deal in the way that getting one's braces off always is. Plus, she just turned 18 so all those little things that mean you're no longer a kid add up to the fact that she's an adult now. Most of the other adults in her life are sort of in denial of this. It means that somehow each of us is 18 years older, too.
